Center for Civilians in Conflict (CIVIC)

Center for Civilians in Conflict is an international non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting the protection of civilians in conflict. CIVIC envisions a world in which no civilian is harmed in conflict. Our mission is to support communities affected by conflict in their quest for protection and strengthen the resolve and capacity of armed actors to prevent and respond to civilian harm.

CIVIC was established in 2003 by Marla Ruzicka, a young humanitarian who advocated on behalf of civilians affected by the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. Honoring Marla’s legacy, CIVIC has kept an unflinching focus on the protection of civilians in conflict. Today, CIVIC has a presence in conflict zones and key capitals throughout the world where it collaborates with civilians to bring their protection concerns directly to those in power, engages with armed actors to reduce the harm they cause to civilian populations, and advises governments and multinational bodies on how to make life-saving and lasting policy changes. CIVIC’s strength is its proven approach and record of improving protection outcomes for civilians by working directly with conflict-affected communities and armed actors. At CIVIC, we believe civilians are not “collateral damage” and civilian harm is not an unavoidable consequence of conflict — civilian harm can and must be prevented.

Cornell University, Gender and the Security Sector (GSS) Lab

The Gender and Security Sector Lab at Cornell University is a research lab, run by Dr. Sabrina Karim, aiming to enhance the security of vulnerable populations around the world by helping to create more gender-responsive security forces globally. Our three focus areas include increasing women’s participation, wellbeing, and retention in security forces globally, shifting the organizational culture of the security forces around the world to be more gender equitable, less violent, and more responsive to sexual and gender-based violence, and facilitating improved interactions between community members and security force personnel so that vulnerable populations, such as women, feel that the security forces are responsive to their needs. We achieve these goals through rigorous research published in top academic journals and presses, unique partnerships that facilitate a direct research to policy pipeline, consulting, advising, and training, and advocacy through (social) media and events.

Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP)

The foundation was established in 1995 by the Swiss government, as a contribution to NATO’s Partnership for Peace, but its roots go way back to the Geneva Summit of 1985, where U.S. President Ronald Reagan and Soviet General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev exposed the pressing need to strengthen national expertise in the field of disarmament and international security. So the Swiss Confederation took the initiative to design a training programme that facilitated exchange between experts and government officials and contributes to NATO’s Partnership for Peace initiative. Over the course of 30 years, the GCSP expanded its portfolio and provides a unique 360° approach to learn about and solve global challenges.

The foundation’s mission is to educate leaders, facilitate dialogue, advise through in-house research, inspire new ideas and connect experts to develop sustainable solutions to build a more peaceful future. Today, the GCSP is still partly supported by the Swiss government and governed by 55 member states on the Foundation Council.

PAX

PAX has been working to build just and peaceful societies across the globe for over 75 years. We work on building inclusive peace, protecting civilians from the violence of war, and ending armed conflict. We do this both in the Netherlands and in conflict areas worldwide, together with local partners and people who, like us, believe that everyone has the right to a dignified life in a peaceful society. The PAX Protection of Civilians (PoC) program seeks to increase the effectiveness of PoC interventions by enabling civilians to hold local and internal security actors to account, and by enabling and motivating security actors to design and implement protection strategies that are civilian-centered.

Security Council Report (SCR)

Security Council Report (SCR), established in 2005, is an independent think tank with the mission of supporting the transparency, effectiveness and accountability of the UN Security Council. To do so, SCR presents accurate information, with scrupulous fact-checking; applies its own impartial analysis; and makes its products publicly available and accessible. SCR also provides expert capacity building for elected members of the Council, and hosts and contributes to forums for in-depth discussion of the Council’s work.

SCR is the leading international voice providing balanced information and analysis on the UN Security Council. Its scrutiny of issues on the Security Council’s agenda, and of the Council’s procedures and practice, has helped catalyse ideas and action by Council members, civil society, and other decision-makers. By convening stakeholders, SCR has been able to deepen the analysis of issues before the Council and its working methods and performance. SCR works from the assumption that better-informed Security Council and civil society members and more transparent decision-making processes will, over time, lead to better Council outcomes.

Trier University - Chair of International Relations and Foreign Policy

Research and Teaching at the Chair of International Relations and Foreign Policy at Trier University (Prof. Dr. Manuel Fröhlich) focuses on the relevance and interrelationship of ideas, individuals, and institutions in world politics. Specifically, this involves five interrelated key aspects: Foreign Policy and Diplomacy, International Organizations and Global Governance, Peace and Conflict Studies, Political Theory and Philosophy of International Relations as well as Politics and Governance under the Conditions of Globalization. In this context, peace operations are studied with an emphasis on the historical origins, normative and ethical underpinnings as well as the challenges of leadership posed to individual actors working in peace operations. Ongoing research focuses on a dedicated database on the deployment, experiences and personalities of SRSGs as well as a diverse set of case studies on former and current individuals serving in peace operations.
