At the UN Peacekeeping Ministerial breakout session “Fueling Greener Footprints: Operational Resilience and Environmental Management” the Global Governance Institute moderated a an in-depth conversation with UN Under-Secretary-General for Operational Support, Atul Khare and a wide range of member states.

This high-level, interactive session explored concrete ways to introduce renewable energy, improve environmental management, and build more agile and sustainable UN Peace Operations. The discussion not only explored the ecological impacts of 'greening' UN peacekeeping, but also underlined the concrete and measurable effects that the environmental strategy has on making peacekeeping operations safer, more secure and resilient. For example, by reducing the reliance on diesel fuel and the reliance on diesel convoys, the risks of convoy attacks have been significantly reduced. UN peace operations also leave behind sustainable legacies by transferring green technology and infrastructure to the host nations after completing an operation.

Designed as an interactive “fishbowl” meeting and exchange, the session also offered space for Member States to share and announce their own initiatives in the realm of greener peacekeeping.
